La Singularity University in Wired Italia

Il numero di gennaio di Wired Italia ha un bell’articolo di Luca Sofri sulla Singularity University e su Ray Kurzweil, uno dei fondatori di SU assieme a Peter Diamandis.

Luca è venuto a visitare la Singularity University presso NASA Ames durante la sessione inaugurale GSP-09 nel Luglio 2009, ed è tornato a visitare Ray presso il suo ufficio nei dintorni di Boston in Agosto. Mi piace molto come descrive l’istituzione e le persone che la costituiscono.

Anche se le politiche editoriali attuali di Wired Italia fanno sì che non tutto il materiale della rivista viene messo online e quindi non puoi trovare l’articolo direttamente, c’è parecchio materiale aggiuntivo, sotto forma di video che ho girato con varie persone tra i docenti e speaker invitati esterni. È bello vedere che Wired Italia continua a parlare di SU e delle persone che la compongono, dopo gli articoli su Peter Diamandis e Dan Barry. È sicuro che ci sono molte persone e attività interessanti…  Ah, a proposito: And, yes, sono aperte le iscrizioni per il prossimo Executive Program di 9 giorni a fine febbraio, che è quasi esaurito, e al Graduate Studies Program di 10 settimane in partenza a Giugno 2010. Che tu possa passare tra quest’anno che viene e i prossimi quelle diecimila ore che secondo Malcolm Gladwell servono per diventare davvero esperto del campo della tua passione, anche se nuova, anche se non c’entra con il tuo lavoro di adesso. Perché tu sia veramente pronto a cogliere l’occasione che si presenta inaspettata! Preparato a riconoscere il valore di quello che agli altri potrà sembrare una follia ma che dimostrerà con il tempo di avere grande valore per tutti e non solo per te e i tuoi sogni.

Stasera ad Oil Project parliamo di Stephen Wolfram

Oggi, 10 dicembre alle 21 presso il progetto di apprendimento online libero Oil Project tengo una lezione dal titolo “Stephen Wolfram: una rivoluzione nel metodo scientifico?“”Fin dai tempi antichi la matematica è stata ritenuta la disciplina teorica per eccellenza. La sua pratica era molto diversa da quella delle scienze naturali che ne sfruttavano gli strumenti. Il metodo scientifico che combina teoria e sperimentazione, non pareva poter abbracciare anche la matematica. A partire dallo studio degli automi cellulari e dei pattern in generale, Stephen Wolfram ha cambiato tutto questo. Basandosi sul potenziarsi degli strumenti di calcolo ha costruito nell’arco di oltre due decenni di progetto ininterrotto un insieme di strumenti impareggiabile. Ha aperto la strada ad intere nuove aree di esplorazioni matematiche e metodologiche, che si stanno rivelando estremamente fertili.”

Internet per la pace

Internet non è solo uno strumento. I suoi effetti non sono neutrali, e simmetrici per il bene o il male. Vi è una deriva netta verso le conseguenze positive per come le persone possono esprimere la propria creatività, in modo trasparente e comunicare liberamente in tutto il mondo.

Il 20 novembre sarà ufficializzata la candidatura di Internet e delle persone dietro il suo sviluppo per il Premio Nobel per la Pace del 2010.

Di nuovo alla Singularity University per l’Executive Program

È appena iniziato l’Executive Program alla Singularity University questo fine settimana e vi terrò una lezione sull’Internet degli oggetti nella traccia Networks and Computing Systems e uno Spime Design Workshop. Il programma di nove settimane è stato abbreviato—in modo abbastanza appropriato per un corso che parla dell’accelerazione delle tecnologie—in soli nove giorni! (E non vedo l’ora di sperimentare il prossimo ;) di nove ore, nove minuti e nove secondi …)

Gli studenti sono eccezionali, come l’ultima volta durante l’estate, e in realtà molti degli studenti dell’estate sono tornati come assistenti, che è di per sé una testimonianza della fedeltà che la scuola ha generato fin dall’inizio. Finalmente c’è anche un italiano: Khaled Kilzie è stato ammesso come studente.

Il calendario è incredibilmente fitto, con conferenze, workshop, visite, lavoro di gruppo, dalle 8,30 del mattino fino alle 10,30 di sera, e oltre… Ma ne vale la pena ogni minuto!

I video delle lezioni dell’estate iniziano a essere pubblicate online nel canale YouTube della Singularity University e anche il discorso di apertura di Ray Kurzweil dall’Executive Program è già on-line.

La capacità di immaginare e quindi creare mondi nuovi

Ci saranno quelli che dicono che anche questo è solo retorica. Ma se lo è—e lo dico da ateo missionario—allora è di quel tipo retorica del “in principio era il verbo”, che crea i mondi disegnati dalle parole. Che rende reale quello che per gli altri non è nemmeno immaginabile.

Non dobbiamo temere le persone la cui pochezza rischia di definire orizzonti ristretti. La loro influenza meschina sarà lavata via dalla storia. Ci sono questi esempi che ci permettono di guardare oltre. Facciamoci dare degli ingenui, lasciamo che chi cinicamente rigetta gli ideali che queste parole esprimono scopra da sè l’impossibilità di creare un insieme di valori coerenti.

Un futuro fertile, un futuro desiderabile: questa deve essere la nostra scommessa.

ON WINNING THE NOBEL PEACE PRIZE

THE PRESIDENT: Good morning. Well, this is not how I expected to wake up this morning. After I received the news, Malia walked in and said, “Daddy, you won the Nobel Peace Prize, and it is Bo’s birthday!” And then Sasha added, “Plus, we have a three-day weekend coming up.” So it’s good to have kids to keep things in perspective.
I am both surprised and deeply humbled by the decision of the Nobel Committee. Let me be clear: I do not view it as a recognition of my own accomplishments, but rather as an affirmation of American leadership on behalf of aspirations held by people in all nations.
To be honest, I do not feel that I deserve to be in the company of so many of the transformative figures who’ve been honored by this prize — men and women who’ve inspired me and inspired the entire world through their courageous pursuit of peace.
But I also know that this prize reflects the kind of world that those men and women, and all Americans, want to build — a world that gives life to the promise of our founding documents. And I know that throughout history, the Nobel Peace Prize has not just been used to honor specific achievement; it’s also been used as a means to give momentum to a set of causes. And that is why I will accept this award as a call to action — a call for all nations to confront the common challenges of the 21st century.
These challenges can’t be met by any one leader or any one nation. And that’s why my administration has worked to establish a new era of engagement in which all nations must take responsibility for the world we seek. We cannot tolerate a world in which nuclear weapons spread to more nations and in which the terror of a nuclear holocaust endangers more people. And that’s why we’ve begun to take concrete steps to pursue a world without nuclear weapons, because all nations have the right to pursue peaceful nuclear power, but all nations have the responsibility to demonstrate their peaceful intentions.
We cannot accept the growing threat posed by climate change, which could forever damage the world that we pass on to our children — sowing conflict and famine; destroying coastlines and emptying cities. And that’s why all nations must now accept their share of responsibility for transforming the way that we use energy.
We can’t allow the differences between peoples to define the way that we see one another, and that’s why we must pursue a new beginning among people of different faiths and races and religions; one based upon mutual interest and mutual respect.
And we must all do our part to resolve those conflicts that have caused so much pain and hardship over so many years, and that effort must include an unwavering commitment that finally realizes that the rights of all Israelis and Palestinians to live in peace and security in nations of their own.
We can’t accept a world in which more people are denied opportunity and dignity that all people yearn for — the ability to get an education and make a decent living; the security that you won’t have to live in fear of disease or violence without hope for the future.
And even as we strive to seek a world in which conflicts are resolved peacefully and prosperity is widely shared, we have to confront the world as we know it today. I am the Commander-in-Chief of a country that’s responsible for ending a war and working in another theater to confront a ruthless adversary that directly threatens the American people and our allies. I’m also aware that we are dealing with the impact of a global economic crisis that has left millions of Americans looking for work. These are concerns that I confront every day on behalf of the American people.
Some of the work confronting us will not be completed during my presidency. Some, like the elimination of nuclear weapons, may not be completed in my lifetime. But I know these challenges can be met so long as it’s recognized that they will not be met by one person or one nation alone. This award is not simply about the efforts of my administration — it’s about the courageous efforts of people around the world.
And that’s why this award must be shared with everyone who strives for justice and dignity — for the young woman who marches silently in the streets on behalf of her right to be heard even in the face of beatings and bullets; for the leader imprisoned in her own home because she refuses to abandon her commitment to democracy; for the soldier who sacrificed through tour after tour of duty on behalf of someone half a world away; and for all those men and women across the world who sacrifice their safety and their freedom and sometime their lives for the cause of peace.
That has always been the cause of America. That’s why the world has always looked to America. And that’s why I believe America will continue to lead.

Non riesco nemmeno a dire il suo nome

Che cos’è? Giorno dopo giorno rende sempre più difficile vivere serenamente di regole giuste. Regole che viola, che deride, che stravolge. Come può insinuarsi in modo così ampio, viscido e distruttivo nella mente? Me ne voglio liberare la mente. Non posso accettare che possa determinare il mio presente e anche solo parzialmente il futuro dei miei figli. Non rieso a non pensarci.

Come la violenza sessuale sporca l’immagine del corpo, deformando la percezione del sè, così mi sento la mente deformata e violentata dall’attacco quotidiano alla mia intelligenza.

Perché non dovrebbe essere possibile riferirsi ad una realtà condivisa e condivisibile? Dove valori, desideri, immagini, aspirazioni siano confrontabili. Mi accorgo di chiedermi, quando sono in mezzo ad un gruppo di persone, cosa pensano e come pensano, come possono pensare in modo così radicalmente diverso da non provare il mio stesso ribrezzo.

Non è stato sempre così. E non sarà sempre così. Non deve essere così.

Il momento per cambiare, di intervenire c’è stato. Quando e come arriverà di nuovo? Come facciamo a costruire affinché quando arriva, non scopriamo con orrore che si sta scendendo a nuove bassezze?

Sono confuso. Forse anche un po’ impaurito. Non riesco nemmeno a dire il suo nome.

Lezione alla Singularity University

Sono da una settimana al NASA Ames Research Center, presso la Singularity University. È stata una fantastica opportunità di seguire le lezioni, seguire gli studenti e interagire con gli altri Advisor e lo staff. Ho scritto le mie impressioni su twitter, citando dalle lezioni, ed è stata un’esperienza unica.

Oggi 28 luglio alle 19 ore di California, se sei nella Silicon Valley e vuoi venire alla NASA, terrò io stesso una lezione sull’Internet degli Oggetti, seguita da un workshop interattivo e divertente di Spime Design. Ci sarà anche un rinfresco alla fine!
